This book “Windows in the Walls of Silence” opens a different kind of windows and narrates another story of a situation not seen by many and of different forms of life and resistance. The book documents the feelings, emotions and ideas of more than 40 Palestinian women who lived the “second Intifada”, and witnessed the invasions and shelling suffered by Palestinian territories since 2000.
The idea of the book started with an attempt to make the voice of Palestinian women heard as it is not usually covered by the media. It aims to present another picture of women other than the gloomy faces of women crying their martyrs or the ruins of their demolished homes. It raises high a different voice that complements the official political discourse that excludes women from decision making centers in the community. Women of different ages and from different parts of Palestine express in words, images and handicrafts a message of “the power of life” with a positive energy that bypasses the culture of death. The rhetoric of the media is not necessarily the prevailing narrative for out of sadness joy and hope are born and out of suffering emerge stories of success and steadfastness.
