  • Project: Contributing to a Culture of Peace, Reconciliation and Equal Rights
    Project Partner:
The Center for Conflict Resolution and Reconciliation (CCRR)
Date & Place: April – November 2006, Bethlehem- Palestine
CCRR aims at helping to create a sense of ownership towards a culture of non-violence, reconciliation and equal rights through a network of 15 sheikhs who believe in the values of non-violence. They believe in the importance of raising awareness of capacities of peace within Islam. The project is designed to help raising awareness for the scale of inner-community violence (especially against women), overcoming the bad connotation the word “peace” has in the Palestinian society since the Oslo process, providing Palestinians with material support in religious discussions about the idea of non-violence, communicating an authentic and peaceful Islam within Palestine and the international community, and preparing the ground for future activities, including possible exchange programs, in which Palestinian sheikhs will internationally campaign for the idea and the values of non-violence.  CCRR will hold 20 facilitated meetings with the sheikhs, which will include the production of an illustrated book on parts of the Quran concerning non-violence. The book will feature high quality photographs of Muslim holy sites in Palestine, thereby visually connecting icons of Palestine with the non-violent aspects of the Quran. Working with the media CCRR will create awareness of the project. A conference will be held to introduce the activities of the project and the book to the general public.
