Project Partner: Media Institute - Birzeit University Date & Place: April – May 2006, Ramallah/West Bank Under the auspices of the Media Institute – Birzeit University, students of journalism produce a monthly supplement for Al-Ayyam newspaper called “Al-Hal”. The overall goals of this project are to improve the quality of journalism in Palestine by decreasing self-censorship and to provide a training platform for students and practicing journalists. Al-Hal represents such a platform because it enhances freedom of press, gives more chances for young journalists, and raises the level of journalistic professionalism in Palestine. hbf will support two issues of Al-Hal, therefore promoting in addition to freedom of expression, respect of human rights and gender equality.
- Project: Improving gender images in local TV stations
Project Partner: Women, Media and Development (TAM) Date & Place: April – December 2006, West Bank TAM will invest in participatory training (learning by doing) of 16 TV journalists in order to improve the gender images on local TV stations. These journalists already got training in gender and women’s rights. They will get further training on research methodology and technical training. The trainees will be encouraged to select topics documenting Palestinian women’s life. With the supervision of TAM members and the technical support of the local TV stations, they will produce 16 documentary films. These will be subjected to group discussion, analysis and updating. When they reach high standards, the films will be shown in local TV stations and will provide basic material for local TV broadcasting. hbf will support the two meetings at the beginning and towards the end of the project, in which trainees will select their topics and will discuss their products. Furthermore, hbf will also support the promotional material of the project (brochure and press conference). With this project TAM aims at empowering Palestinian media practitioners to assert women’s rights and position in the society, increasing self esteem and confidence of women’s media practitioners, contributing (through local media) to break down stereotypes about women and transmitting new ideas that will then challenge and influence the general public, and improving the quality of local TV programs and the quantity of programs on women’s issues.
