- Project: KayKab Garden
Project Partner: Friends Schools Date & Place: 2005, Ramallah/West Bank The purpose of the project is to use innovative opportunities and creative resources to increase environmental awareness in the communities of Ramallah and El-Bireh. After the establishment of the Kaykab Garden during the first cooperation between the Friends Schools and the Heinrich Boell Foundation, the key themes Palestinian Heritage and Sustainability shall be addressed during activities within the Kaykab Garden. The intention is to encourage a resource, which identifies the heritage of plants and their stories in the culture of Palestine. The Tree garden will be open to the public as a place to informally educate the public about environmental protection and Palestinian flora. The garden will also serve as a facility for workshops, school class visits, environmental summer camps, and regular Kaykab Garden Celebrations.
- Project: Awareness and Production of Renewable Energy by Youth
Project Partner: Al-Muntada, Young Scientists Club Date & Place: February – August 2005, Gaza The lack of capacity for environmental knowledge and practices in different regions of the Gaza Strip lead the Young Scientists Club to initiate the project "Awareness and Production of Renewable Energy". It provides the youth with the creative and critical approach of Al-Muntada with awareness of renewable energy. Al-Muntada is an educational NGO, which attempts to challenge children to question, discuss, deduce and reason in order to reach their own conclusions and discover their potential. Therefore, two hundreds young men and women are introduced to the concept of renewable energy. They are encouraged to think of creative ideas to use available types of renewable energy, such as sun and wind, and invent simple solutions for common problems. The participants are exposed to different forms of learning including field trips, fact sheets, experiments and trainings. The outcomes of the different projects will be exhibited for the public in order to attract more attention to the issue of renewable energy, especially among teachers and educators. The project partner Al-Muntada contracted for this project a coordinator, assistants, consultants and trainers. Al-Muntada aims to use the results of the projects for the foundation of a research center for the use of energy. The participants shall continue their activities for renewable energy through campaigning with the support of Al - Muntada.
- Project: The Protection of Natural Heritage in Palestine
Project Partner: Center for Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences/ Birzeit University Date & Place: February – September 2005, Ramallah/West Bank The Center for Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences (CEOHS) at Birzeit University conducts eight training workshops in Jenin, Tulkarem, Qalqilya, Nablus, Ramallah, Jericho, Bethlehem, and Hebron to raise awareness of natural heritage in Palestine. The concept of Natural Heritage is relatively new in the region. The UNESCO declaration of 1972 encourages governments to enact laws to protect cultural and heritage in their own countries. Currently CEOHS is leading the natural heritage team for the Institute of Law at the Birzeit University and was involved in drafting the natural heritage law. It is part of the World Bank Initiative Bethlehem 2000. Passing a law on natural heritage requires support from different stakeholders in the Palestinian society. The eight workshops shall target government, municipal and local government officials as well as key members of the local industry and relevant NGOs. Also local Councils from neighboring towns and villages will be invited. These people are crucial to enforce laws for environmental protection in Palestine. Each workshop will be attended by 40 participants. They shall be the starting point for forming active committees in the different districts. The committees will carry on the awareness activities and will back up the ratification and implementation of the drafted law for the natural heritage in Palestine.
- Project: “I don’t want to get thirsty” Phase 1
Project Partner: Dolphin Marine Group/Jordan Marine Scouts Date & Place: March-September 2005, Aqaba/Jordan The Dolphin Marine Group/Jordan Marine Scouts is the youth organization of the Royal Marine Conservation Society of Jordan (JREDS) and part of a network of 35 youth parliaments from different parts in Jordan. The group will prepare the suitable training material and conduct at least 17 meetings in different regions in Jordan. Each training session will be attended by 20 male and female youth. The project aims to empower participants to develop activities in their local communities for spreading awareness on the principle of “water as a human right” such as campaigning and lobbying, in coordination with a German consultant and water expert Simone Klawitter, participants developed awareness and campaigning materials such as videp clips, plays and songs. The general guidelines for the training will be covering the evaluation criteria of the UN concept of water as a human right. At the end of the project period the participants will meet at a two days conference in Aqaba in which they will present their activities and exchange knowledge and experience.
- Project: Environmental Programs for Egyptian Candidates in General Elections
Project Partner: Habi Center for Environmental Rights Date & Place: June-December 2005, Cairo Environmental issues and concerns are not part of the election campaigns for candidates in Egypt. Habi Center will take the effort to investigate and study different political party programmes to identify gaps and possibilities concerning environmental policies. At the same time intensive consultations will be conducted with environmental NGOs and experts to identify their main concerns and demands. A draft environmental program will be prepared and discussed in a national meeting environmental NGOs and experts. The modified program will be printed, distributed and promoted in different governorates and presented to different political parties and candidates to get their response. The reports of the whole process will be documented and printed.
