The issue of Sustainable Development goes to the heart of a number of inter-related global problems, the most pertinent of which in the Middle East are poverty, inequality, political instability and conflict, environmental deterioration and population growth. The failure to integrate environmental sustainability into development policy and practice is key area needing to be addressed by regional governments.
Given the widespread lack of environmental awareness in the region, raising understanding throughout society of the need for sustainable development is crucially important. The hbf programme component therefore focuses on enhancing environmental awareness and advocacy work around the issue of sustainable development in the countries of the region.
hbf’s activities in the Sustainable Development programme are based on the belief that a development process which emphasises a responsible approach to the use of natural resources so as not to compromise the ability of future generations to meet their own needs, is not only feasible but imperative. Good policies and economic growth, which work to improve people's lives, can also work to improve the environment.
We address these issues through campaigns, seminars, workshops and conferences, as well as through support for concrete measures to improve the environment. In all activities, the programme specifically targets the region’s youth and young leadership, in addition to environmental experts, decision makers and journalists. Special attention is paid to the role of women in promoting and advocating sustainable development and sound environmental awareness policies.
- Encouraging youth advocating sustainable development especially their right to water and access to renewable energy. Tamer Institute in Palestine and the Royal Marine Conservation Society of Jordan (JREDS) in Jordan encouraged youth to launch initiatives increasing awareness of water as a human right and advocating their right to water. They organized open forums in which participants shared the outcomes and progress of local community initiatives they undertook. They also established knowledge centers for youth in local communities to serve as resource centers for the right to water with permanent exhibition of books, films and any other products promoting the right to water.

For example The Hashemite University in Az-Zarqa- Jordan conducted a one day workshop on the potential of renewable energy in Jordan. The workshop was accompanied by a three days exhibition promoting renewable energy technology. The Palestine Polytechnic University (PPU) in Hebron-Palestine organized an international conference on Energy and Environmental Protection that addressed several relevant issues. The three days conference with participants from different governorates in Palestine as well as international participants was dedicated to the relationship between sustainable development and renewable energy, recent developments in the field, challenges in Palestine and possibilities of overcoming them.

Supporting creative educational initiatives. For example, the Friends Girls School kindergarten adapted a new comprehensive and creative environmental awareness for children and their families. The experience which was implemented last year was documented on a DVD format. The DVD will be copied and distributed for kindergarten teachers in Ramallah governorate. An environmental friendly bag will be produced and distributed as and incentive for children, their families and kindergarten teachers.
